PMP Requirements Summary

To put it simply, PMI gives you two options to fulfill the requirements for the PMP exam. They are listed as below:

You should either have a:

Bachelors Degree (Four-year undergraduate degree)

  • 3 years of project management experience
  • 4,500 hours leading and directing projects
  • 35 hours of project management education

Or you would need to have:

Secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree or the global equivalent)

  • 5 years of project management experience
  • 7,500 hours of leading and directing projects
  • 35 hours of project management education

What are the eligibility requirements for PMP?

There are 3 categories of requirements you have to fulfill, in order to become eligible for taking the PMP exam. This includes:

  • Educational Background
  • Project Management Experience
  • Project Management Education – 35 hours
  • Educational Background

You either need to have a bachelor’s degree or a high school degree to be able to apply for the PMP exam. In the PMP application, you would fill out the name of your institution, year of graduation and area of study.

  • Project Management Experience

You need experience of leading and managing projects. It is important to note that it is NOT necessary to have been in the role of a project manager, meaning, It’s alright even if your title wasn’t “Project Manager”.

As long as you worked on managing a project, even if you were a junior executive, you would still be eligible for the PMP exam.

Furthermore, also note that experience of managing projects must not be overlapping. E.g. if you were working on 2 different projects in the same 6 months, you can’t count them as a double experience.

If you have a bachelor’s degree, you need to have 3 years of experience managing projects to be eligible.

If you have a high school degree, you need to have 5 years of experience managing projects to be eligible.

  • Project Management Education – 35 hours

You need to have had formal project management training worth 35 hours. This can be from a training institute or even the courses you studied from university. So any course, training workshop, or classes for which you can provide a certificate of completion can fulfill this criteria.

In general, it is best to acquire PMP training from a good training institute which can provide you the entire 35 hours’ worth of training.

You would need to present this certificate to the PMI as it will be required for submission in their application form for PMP Exam registration.

Applying for PMP with a Bachelor’s degree

  • 3 years (36 months) of project management experience
  • 4,500 hours leading and directing projects
  • 35 hours of project management education

So if you are a university graduate and have a 4 year Bachelor’s degree, then this is the option for you.

First, you need to have 3 years or 4500 hours of project management experience

What this means is that out of the 3 years of your working experience, you need to have spent 4500 hours of those 3 years in leading projects.

Plus, you need to have project management training and education of 35 hours.

Applying for PMP with a Secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree or the global equivalent)

  • 5 years of project management experience
  • 7,500 hours of leading and directing projects
  • 35 hours of project management education

If you have a high school diploma, instead of a 4-year university degree, then this is the second way in which you can apply for the PMP certification. However, the requirements will slightly increase in this case.

To start with, you need to have a minimum of five years or 7500 hours of project management experience.

What this means is that out of the 5 years of your working experience, you need to have spent 7500 hours of those 5 years in leading projects.

To sum up, thats all you need to know on what it takes to fulfill PMP certification requirements.
