What is the cost for the PMP Certification Exam (PMP Exam cost Only)?
To give you a straight answer, the PMP certification cost is $555. Note that this is only the cost of taking the PMP exam.
Now to get into more detail, the costs for registering for the PMP exam can be divided into 2 groups of people.
- Those who want to get the PMI membership
- Those who do not get PMI membership
If you are a member of PMI, the exam will cost you $405.
If you are not a member of the PMI, the exam will cost you $555
BUT do note that the PMI membership costs $139. So if you get the PMI membership, then you will have to pay an overall amount of = $139(Membership fee) + $405 (PMP exam fee) = $554, which is basically the same amount roughly.
So the question is, is there any advantage to getting the PMI membership.
First, you will get a copy of the PMBOK Guide for much lesser than the market cost. Also, you can download the PMBOK as a digital copy for free.
Secondly, Re-examination fees will be lesser. So if you have PMI’s membership and in case you fail the exam on your first attempt, you can give the exam again for $275.
However, if you are not a member, you will be charged $375 for retaking the PMP exam.
So it’s completely up to you if you want to sign up for the membership.
Is it necessary to become a member of PMI to take the PMP exam?
No it is not necessary to become a PMI member to give the exam, but of course you would need to register yourself on their website. You can still give the exam and become a certified PMP even if you don’t sign up for the PMI membership.
PMP Book Costs
PMP books can be pricey, they can range from $50 to $100.
We will list down our most highly recommended books for PMP preparation here. In our opinion, these are hands down the best guides for PMP prep.
The first is Rita Mulcahy’s PMP Exam Prep, you can find the latest edition here.
This book costs anywhere from $70-$100.
Secondly, you should get the PMBOK Guide. It stands for the Project Management Body of Knowledge and is published by the PMI itself.
The guide will cost you around $60.
PMP Training Cost
PMP training costs will differ depending on if you’re taking Online PMP training, or Classroom based PMP training.
Classroom trainings can cost between $500 to $2000, depending on which country you’re in. In a PMP classroom training, You will attend live classes where an instructor will guide you on how to prepare for the PMP exam and cover the syllabus as per PMI’s outline. These trainings are more expensive because you are taught by a PMP certified instructor in person.
Online PMP training can be much more affordable than live classroom trainings. You can get a good program anywhere from $200 to $400. The biggest benefit of online training is that you can complete them at your own pace. However, do note that some trainings have a time limit, for example, they might give you access for 3 months or 1 year. On the other hand, some might give you a lifetime access, so its important to check how long you can have access to the training for.
Certification renewal fee
You have to renew your PMP certification every 3 years. It costs $150 for Non PMI members and $60 for PMI members.
Maintaining your PDU’s
At the end of 3 years, you have to fulfill the 60 PDU’s requirement to maintain your Pmp certification. PMI allows you a variety of options to get PDU’s, for example, attending trainings, seminars, listening to podcasts, reading a book etc.
You can get PDU’s ranging from $10 to $100 from different websites, so the total cost for maintaining your 60 PDU’s directly depends on how much you end up spending on the options I mentioned above.
